How do you get students to really engage in history?
This past week while learning about explorers, our class spent time learning about Marco Polo. As some of you know, Polo traveled along the Silk Road and was a merchant. He traded for spices, silk, and other valuable goods. Along his way, he was granted a paiza (our modern passport) from the ruler, Kublai Khan.
My students were really interested in this study, so I decided to take it one step further. We painted our own paizas (passports). Instead of using regular paint, I made ‘spice paint.’ I took regular white glue and mixed ground spices. The room was filled with the aroma of the Old World. It was wonderful! Students designed beautiful paizas and enjoyed smelling the aromas as they painted.
*the paint does get a little thick so you can add a little water, if you try this in your classroom!
