Four years ago, I took a chance and started the Odyssey of the Mind (OM) program at Fritz Elementary. I wasn’t sure if it would catch on. Four OM seasons later, it has become part of our school culture. OM is a creative, problem solving club that allows 7 team members to work together to create a solution to a problem.
One of our Fritz teams had to create 3 working vehicles that would travel 16 feet without the assistance of the team members. The team-created vehicles also had to travel from different heights and cause a reaction along the way. This required engineering, design, and problem solving skills. These vehicles didn’t work on the first, second, or third try. Just like in life, we have to try, try, and try again.
At the regional competition, this team placed 1st. Then, at the state competition they placed 1st again allowing them to move on to the World Finals in Michigan. In Michigan, the team competed against 57 teams and placed 15th. What an accomplishment!
This program not only helps kids think ‘outside-of-the-box,’ but it challenges them to work together with the same small group of people for months and months. There is no turning back!
I cannot wait to see what the 2017-18 season brings for Fritz Elementary!
