Summer. A teacher’s time of reflection and rejuvenation.
Donalyn Miller’s Reading in the Wild helped me get a head-start into summer. This resource has practical suggestions for the classroom in both reading and writing. Miller doesn’t overwhelm your brain, but instead encourages and uplifts you as a teacher. As I was reading, I kept saying, “Yea, I can do that!” or “Wow! This will be perfect!” As you can see, I already have post-it notes plastered on the pages and if you would look inside, you would see highlighter and pen on many pages. I know that I will be implementing her suggestions for reader’s notebook in my classroom this year.
I encourage all teachers to give this book a chance. Let Miller re-engage your inner reader. Allow reading to become a natural, enjoyable part of your classroom again.
Lastly, during your summer, just read! Read for fun. Read for learning. Read to someone. Read with someone.
